Media Experimentation Workshop

I will be leading a media experimentation workshop in January at The Visual Arts Center here in Richmond. Participants will be encouraged to explore the unconventional mixing of media to develop new and different ways of image making. By being exposed to a full range of material processes and experimental techniques, participants will develop the ability to express themselves as artists in ways never thought possible.

Class participants will use hardware stores, thrift shops and junk yards as their source of supplies. The search for materials will be endlessly fascinating. Spontaneous field trips may even be arranged! Maybe even some dumpster diving!

At two o'clock on New Year's morning, a man in Chicago leaves a party. Walking home, he slips on a patch of ice and falls, bashes his head on the edge of a bench. He loses consciousness and lies on the sidewalk until well after daybreak, his body obscured by a mound of plowed snow.

That afternoon, a Channel Six News anchor reviews his top stories. The tragedy of Stephen Cox, 37, husband and expectant father, found dead in Lincoln Park due to exposure, is not, in the anchor's opinion, the worst tragedy to report, yet it distresses him most. In make-up, he protects his lapels with a paper bib and thinks of Stephen Cox's open coat, a dress coat with no liner and clean lines, a gentleman's coat. The image of such a coat stirs a vague vibration in the anchor's mind, the story eclipsing all others because it flirts with his memory, as though there is a reason for the anchor's sympathy for Stephen Cox that his memory knows but he does not. Perplexed, he phones his sister.

Leaving her shift at the clinic, the psychiatric nurse answers her brother's call on her mobile. She says, "a London Fog, maybe?" when he asks what their father had worn during winters.

Her brother presses, "Did we know someone who died like this?" But the nurse is tired, and without reflecting answers, "No." All day, the nurse had tried to soothe a patient, a young woman who believes herself to be made of paper and fears bright lights will set her on fire, that to leave her room is to risk being crumpled. The nurse has little patience left for her brother.

He sighs, "Stephen Cox, poor bastard," and for a moment, the nurse brightens. She reminds him of Brian Cox, her college boyfriend. "Maybe that's what you're thinking of," she says.

Later, the nurse attends a movie at the science museum. For the New Year, she has resolved to wear heels twice a week, to meet new people somehow. The acclaimed film documents explorers as they venture to climb Mount Everest. As she sits in the crowded theater, the nurse thinks of seeing movies with Brian Cox, how they kissed in the back row and held hands and sometimes let their hands travel. On the screen, falling snowflakes land on the camera lens and wetly blur the image and the nurse recalls the translucent paper her patients use for decoupage or origami. Once, spilled water dissolved a row of folded swans to pulp and the young woman patient was inconsolable.

Two of the explorers in the film are a married couple who set up camp at the base of the final peak. They have come so far, but at night the man shivers violently and struggles to breathe in the altitude until his wife holds an oxygen mask to his mouth. She secures the closures on his yellow parka. The theater is bright with the white light of the snow, and the nurse can see the man next to her lean into the woman on his other side, as though comforting her, or comforting himself. Who knows, the nurse thinks, what else is happening in their life and understands that to hold hands in a theater is to be in the theater, but somewhere else, too. To hold hands in a theater is to say I am watching this movie, but I am also in this life that I share with this person; that I bring this life with me wherever I go. Her own hands in her lap, and cold, the nurse curls her fingers.

The Earnest of Being George

Painter Josh George finds the road to Richmond.

Pablo Picasso famously said that in order to be a painter, a man must do nothing else. Try telling that to Josh George, scheduled for a new one-man show at Ghostprint Gallery.

George is the rarest of creatures, a man who makes his living as a fine-arts painter while pursuing a variety of interests that define him in other ways. The self-proclaimed beer geek became a wine lover when he was invited to exhibit at a show in Italy. While at the gallery owner's home for dinner, he was served a wine unlike anything he'd experienced. Surprised to hear that it had been made by a man who lived up the road, he was hooked. It was the beginning of a wine odyssey that led him to take a part-time job at a wine shop in New York City when he returned home. "It was a way to learn ... and get a discount," he says.

The Italian experience also put him on the road to being a foodie. He's a regular reader of food blogs and is as interested in a restaurant's menu as its wine list. "I was a vegetarian," he says. "What started me eating meat was wine; drinking very tannic wine requires meat. I dove right in — tongue, brains, kidneys. I cook five nights a week and we eat at the dinner table, me and my wife."

No art snob, George loves comic books and considers Velocity Comics "the perfect comic book store." He's a big fan of comic writer Alan Moore and favors simple drawings that move the storytelling forward. Having done some freelance illustration work early in his career, he hopes to come back to it. "I still want to do comic books someday," he insists.

Like any number of artists, he's also musically inclined. Playing guitar with a punk outfit in New York City called Krack Jack, he calls himself a progressive death metal fan. "I used to play in bands," he says, "but it was too much trouble for everyone finding the time."

Time is an issue for a man who tries to work 9 to 5 daily, cranking out a good-sized painting in a few days using many layers of collage, paint and varnish. About his show of new paintings at Ghostprint, "The Story Thus Far," he says: "What I'm trying to capture is weird snapshots of domestic life. I'm trying to channel Rembrandt without being brown."

The path to Richmond appeared when he was asked to be a judge for the annual Richmond Illustrators juried show. George and his wife came down for the weekend, spent time walking around the Fan, and were charmed by the city and its architecture. "Richmond feels European," he says — "old and so beautiful. Drive down Monument Avenue and you feel like you're in Europe."

And after 10 years in New York City, they were getting burned out. "One of the reasons I moved is because there's lots of good food and wine here," he says, "lots of farmers' markets. There's more of a connection to the farming scene here."

A Kansas City native, George is so enamored of his adopted hometown that he harbors a fantasy of buying a block of Grace Street and opening an urban paradise. "It'll have a coffee shop, restaurants and shops. I'm always looking for good espresso. But my coffee shop won't have any to-go business."

But chances are there will be large-scale oil paintings and comic-book reading in a Josh George coffee shop. S

“Establishing Shot” is camera ready at Ghostprint.

Josh George’s “Buddy Patrol” (mixed media on wood) is one of his works featured at Ghostprint Gallery. “I like to create a surface and then kind of look at texture and patterns and color,” he says. “Pretty much everything is covered with something.”

Artist Josh George’s work can be deceiving. When viewed through a photographic image or looked at from afar the viewer encounters interesting imagery and a bold color choice to deliver the narrative. But there’s much more than first perceived.
“This is the first time I have painted conceptually and narratively,” he says. “And it does kind of go back to my childhood influences of drawing robots and superheroes and barbarians. Things you are not supposed to do in a fine arts context.”

George’s show, “Establishing Shot” at Ghostprint Gallery, references the cinematic concept of the same name — the first shots in a movie scene, such as panning across a city, or the interior shot in which the action is about to take place. Like this concept, George creates paintings of varying sizes that are meant to hang near each other. The smaller of the work sets up the shot and the larger work draws the audience in.

From here it’s his process and final product that stand out as much as his subject matter and conceptual titles. Working with acrylic and oil paints as well as various collaged materials, George pieces the paintings together as if they had once been smashed to pieces. Many parts of the paintings are so in-depth with material viewers may find themselves focusing on a single point within the painting, finding it difficult to take in the entirety. Together his concept, narratives and application develop an otherworldly feeling.

The presence of the human form is also central to this show. George views the human form as a “timeless subject matter” with which he’s pushing toward realism without reaching true photographic quality. Working from a foundation of collaged material, George uses the paints and scraps of cloth, paper and wallpaper to form his human subjects. He fleshes together the components just as millions of molecules combine to form a meaty hand. George permits an allowance of the collaged patterns to rise to the surface in areas. His control of the paint creates a translucent element to the figures.

“I like to create a surface and then kind of look at texture and patterns and color — pretty much everything is covered with something,” he says. “I like the history of the collage elements.” Regarding the painstaking effort to create the fractured layer, George says: “They are there to kind of charge the paintings. They have a lot of energy.”

His titles are as pieced and challenging as the work they describe. Strong in scientific language, the titles inspire the bombardment of atoms continually in effect around us. A viewer’s mind may reflect upon the infinite microcosm that allows a human body to physically take up space. With this in mind, viewers might just find some part of themselves deep within one of George’s paintings. S

In a film, the establishing shot is the first shot of a new scene that puts the upcoming action into a context. Often, there’s a tension to these shots, a promise that something cool, exciting, or of consequence is about to happen. In this way, establishing shots remind me of the splash page in a comic book, which was always my favorite page as a kid. This was where the artist showed-off his skill and imagination and got the reader excited for what was to come in the rest of the book.

For this series of paintings, I wanted to make smaller images that functioned as establishing shots for their larger companion pieces that depict the narrative. The small pieces set the scene, then open-up into the larger images whose scale and action involve the viewer and invite them into the painting.

I’ve been wanting to create this body of work for years. It’s been a goal of mine to think about fantastic images in a fine arts context. I wanted to fuse the grace and sophistication of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Annibale Carracci and other artistic greats with images more often associated with comics, cartoons, action flicks, sci-fi book covers: images that can be playful and complex.

But I had to wait to paint these images. The only way to do them, I felt, was large-scale, and back in Brooklyn, where I lived until August 2009, I simply didn’t have the space to go big. Now that I live in Richmond, VA, I’ve had the opportunity to work in more generous studio spaces, and was finally able to make these paintings in the appropriate dimensions.

The Urban Visions of Josh George at Gallery C

High drama is rampant in the paintings of Josh George. Working on panel with an aggressive collage sensibility, George mixes in cloth, bits of paper and wallpaper, patterned fabrics and other assorted materials with his paint to create striking cityscapes and urban canyon views with powerful perspectives, intense color schemes and acute painterly effects. I like to think of them as architectural portraits with more than a little theatricality thrown in.

In his current show at Gallery C, George has paired up his city-based work with a bright series of female nudes in domestic settings, resulting in bath and bedroom interiors reminiscent of the colorfully sweet pastel palette of Bonnard and the masterfully drawn figures of Degas. Markedly different from those artists' luxuriant paint and pastel handling, however, George has perfected an energetic technique in which the layerings of various collage materials are combined with turbid and moody paint shading, bold palette knife slatherings and robust surface modeling. The effect is remarkable; dramatic textures and tension throughout the surface of the panels not only animate the individual works but breathe vigor and a mysteriously spirited allure into the show as a whole.

The artist has acknowledged the clear influence of the Ashcan School of painters—notably Robert Henri, George Bellows and John Sloan. That early 20th-century movement was grounded in realism, often a quite gritty one. For Henri, considered the godfather of the movement, art served but one purpose: "that the people of America learn the means of expressing themselves in their own time and in their own land."

The Ashcan artists were not ones to sugarcoat, and they unabashedly depicted the harshness of urban life (particularly the poorer areas of New York), which also offered a perfect mix of extreme vitality and reality. As Henri pointedly noted, the "big strong thing can only be the result of big strong seeing." George has taken this approach to heart but has developed his own assiduously imaginative approach, composing his cityscapes from memory, culled from his 10 years of living in New York. He described this improv technique to me as a "tedious meditation on where I have been," though his results strike me as much more limber than his own description would suggest.

The hand of a draftsman is clearly evident in George's larger works, and he also holds among his influences Mary Cassatt (a distant cousin of Robert Henri, though "from the better and he from the worse side of the tracks," as Robert Hughes put it). Cassatt's draftsmanship was itself honed under the tutelage of Degas, so George's work flows through a vein of art historical lineage.

A significant number of both the city and figural works in the show are of diminutive scale—measuring only 6 to 8 inches—and the artist uses them as an opportunity to explore composition and color. Composed of scraps of material left over from the larger works, they have a loose, sketchy luminosity and propinquity to assemblage that verges on total abstraction. George has also set for himself an ongoing technical challenge in many of the small panels by attempting to use, as he says, "color temperature and texture, instead of value, to describe form."

Something else to look for when you go: Take note of George's grand titles, which the gallery operator says have been a hit on their own terms. Prone to descriptions of light, energy and obsessive cleanliness, titles like "Chlorine Chloropicrin Phosgene by Wind Dispersal," "Cold Lettuce Omelet, Cold Night" and "Pollution Makes Pretty Sunsets" capture the artist wresting wit from the verbal, as much as he wrings expression from his paint tubes.

This year ArtHamptons moves 2 blocks west to Sayre Park’s 5 bucolic acres. The site is located between Bridgehampton Commons and the Hamptons Classic field, just 1 block north of Montauk Highway on Snake Hollow Rd.

Here is a late night demo I did for some of the students at The Illustration Academy. It is basically a version of what Matt Mahurin and Barron Storey pioneered. Working in a series of oil washes and Crystal Clear on top of a tonal drawing to achieve a kind of old masters effect. Instead of using the lung clogging Crystal Clear I used Matte Medium. This is about 5 different layers. A disclaimer to working this way, the art will probably self destruct in a few years.

During The Illustration Academy Doug Chayka led the charge one night for the students to pick up their oil paints and do some quick 20 minute head studies. Everyone including Anita Kunz took turns posing. Here are some of my portraits, oil paint on bristol board 12x16.

Just finished up at The Illustration Academy where I taught alongside Doug Chayka, John English, Jon Foster, Sterling Hundley, Anita Kunz, Robert Meganck, Jason Manley and C. F. Payne. It was an intense 4 weeks. The students really surprised us with their talent and dedication. We were proud. We took turns running the life drawing component twice a week, whoever wasn't setting up the model and overlooking the session was expected to draw alongside the students. Here are some of my studies. More Academy pics to come!

TAD's Summer Illustration Academy!

For the first time The Illustration Academy will be presented as a special program to TAD's Illustration Department. The program will be held in two locations, Kansas City and Richmond and begins May 31st and ends June 25th. Come spend a month in the studio with the Academy faculty and begin to acquire the tools needed to launch your career!

• Studios will be in the Pod studios for TAD

• Housing will be handled by local colleges for the fee of: Single occupancy- $47.25 person/night Double occupancy- $24.15 person/night (this is forRichmond, Kansas City prices will be finalized in a few days

. A maximum of 30 students will be excepted to either location

• Program Fee is $3900 this includes a years subscription to the VLP

• Discounts of 20% ($780) for returning students and $500 for VLP subscribers

• Portfolio submission required with application (minimum of 6 images)

During the summers of the past several years, The Illustration Academy has brought together some of America's most accomplished and best-known illustrators to share their insights and advice with students. The students range in age from eighteen to sixty years old and have come from not only the United States, but as far away as Hong Kong, England, Belgium, Sweden, Brazil, and Argentina.

Unique to the illustration field is the fact that a graduating student is thrust into the market place and forced to compete with established illustrators. The mission of the Academy is to shorten the gap that exists between the student and the working professional. This problem is resolved using a rigorous hands-on approach implemented by the faculty. The students work through each assignment with a logical step-by-step approach to produce finished illustrations. Driven by real-world examples and deadlines, the students are encouraged to focus on concepts, techniques, and to pursue a personal point of view to make their work unique. Along side the technical demonstrations of media and life drawing skills, the Academy focuses on the functional business practices in the field of illustration. These include self-promotion, advertising, contracts, taxes and accounting.

The Academy has never been more accessible, more affordable, and more promising than this summer's program.
